This book of remembrance – 100 pages for the 100th anniversary of the birth of architect Ion Cristodulo, my father, who, in the 1950s, led for 13 months a brigade of 100 political prisoners working on the restoration of the war-damaged Casino – pursues three distinct goals. These threads will subtly and harmoniously intertwine, supporting one another and amplifying the message we wish to convey: firstly, a tribute to all political prisoners during the rise and entrenchment of the Bolshevik dictatorship, a humble gesture of reverence for their sacrifice; secondly, a historical inquiry into a unique episode – the forced-labor restoration of the majestic edifice on the Black Sea shore; and last but not least, the story of a few of its protagonists - master craftsmen and political prisoners - whose biographies we have managed to partially recover.
